My lab is seeking a PhD student in Computer Science to study the development of artificial intelligence at the edge to support the nuclear nonproliferation mission. Specific topics of interest include all of the following (1) deep learning approaches for near-field and remote sensing, (2) small language models for automated scientific workflows, and (3) neuromorphic computing for adaptive sensing at the edge.
To start immediately or in Spring semester of 2027.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interdisciplinary education in AI/ML and either physics, nuclear engineering, or applied mathematics.
- Strong interest in supporting the nuclear nonproliferation mission and potentially working in DOE national laboratories.
- Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively.
- Have already completed a Master's degree.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Must have already completed a Bachelor's degree.
- Must have existing demonstrated experience in deep learning.
- Must have taken prior formal coursework in deep learning.
- Must have a very strong math background
